BIP-26: Community Curator Recognition

Summary

Create a pilot program to recognize BottoDAO members who add thoughtful discussion to the #Curation channel in Discord. Any post that receives 5 or more [Botto logo emoji] reactions will be automatically fed into a new #Curation-Gems channel.

Rationale

Many strong communities (e.g., Reddit, PROOF) use intrinsic rewards to help align individual behavior with the group’s desired outcomes. However, there is no formal mechanism to recognize BottoDAO members who contribute to the discussion around curation.

Setup

Create new #Curation-Gems channel [read-only]
Add a Discord bot that automatically adds any posts that receive at least 5 [Botto logo] reactions to #Curation-Gems channel

Proposal Specification

Pilot program for 1 month
roedesh to create Discord bot
Quimp & homerfan33 to measure program effectiveness at end of pilot and make recommendation to either:
a) Continue community curation recognition program as is (default option)
b) End community curator recognition program
c) Expand community curation recognition program [see Future Thoughts section]
@bottoDAO to repurpose #Curation-Gems content for Twitter

Criteria of success

Straw poll in Discord where at least 75% agree that “Community Curator Recognition program has increased quality of discussion #Curation channel”
@BottoDAO Twitter content from #Curation-Gems performs above average relative to other posts
Auctions during this time period have higher auction prices than preceding 4 periods
Anyone trying to game the system is clearly identified and solutions to reduce game-ability are created

Advantages

Hypothesis is that strong curation discussion will:
*Help individual members become smarter curators
*Incentivize contributors to post their thoughts earlier in the week, by being the among the first ones to spotlight the best fragments.
*Create cohesive curation narratives among DAO members, which will lead to more DAO members promoting Botto on Twitter and within their networks
*Drive higher-quality weekly outputs that achieve higher auction values
#Curation-Gems channel can be used as quick reference for voters who don’t have time to read through #Curation channel
#Curation-Gems channel may be used to create @BottoDAO Twitter content
#Curation-Gems channel could be used as qualitative feedback to train Botto

Disadvantages

Lower-quality curation voices could be boosted
Though the rewards are intrinsic, upvoting could be game-able (e.g., people creating new Discord accounts and upvoting their own comments)

A successful pilot program could lay the groundwork for:

Badges (no extrinsic value) for Curators. For example, Curator Badge Levels:
*1 post that gets upvoted 5 times = Amethyst Curator
*5 posts that get upvoted 5 times = Emerald Curator
*10 posts that get upvoted 5 times = Ruby Curator
*25 posts that get upvoted 5 times = Sapphire Curator
*50 posts that get upvoted 5 times = Diamond Curator
Delegated voting for curation
Badges for other important BottoDAO goals (e.g., promoting Botto and the DAO on Twitter)
Qualitative training of Botto

I'd like to share a screenshot of how a curated post might look. This is from a prototype I've been working on for the last 2 days.

Curated post

It shows the author of the post, when it was posted, a permalink to the post and the content itself. If the post contains images (attachments), then these will be shown in a grid. This is the first prototype, so it is subject to change. Any feedback is welcome!

Love seeing BIPs like this coming from the community. Very straight forward, run as an experiment, easy to see a quality of life improvement in the discord while also piloting bigger ideas like badges/intrinsic rewards and highlighting community voice and curation on twitter.

I support the proposal 👍. What I find especially useful and interesting is "#Curation-Gems channel may be used to create @BottoDAO Twitter content" and "#Curation-Gems channel could be used as qualitative feedback to train Botto".

For the quality of the conversation personally I think I would prefer the curation channel entirely non measured and non awarded, but I'm open to the experiment. There's always a risk that it takes some intrinsic value and fun out of it when you try to structure things.

Cooper Think this is a good call out of the downside of gamification. I wonder if a higher threshold might help, so I'd suggest keeping it flexible to adjust as @roedesh sees fit or with feedback from folks without the need of another BIP.

Though we don't see 5 emojis a whole lot, it could become expected or people doing it more in hopes of people doing it on their comments. A higher threshold might put it out of reach a bit so that there is more genuine signal of something insightful worth bookmarking to easily come back to.

Of course, it's ideal that there a large group of people just following along and building a collective memory of what's been discussed.

hudsonsims Changing the amount of emojis required is a matter of changing a configuration value and restarting the bot, so no code changes are required. As described in the BIP, we'll be monitoring the effectiveness of the program. If we (or the community) feel that the threshold is too high or low, we can easily change the value and see if that makes a difference.
