BIP-##: The Botto-ful Curation Showdown

Summary

The proposal aims to create a weekly curation competition featuring 5 fragments generated by the Botto protocol. Each fragment will be accompanied by a short description and title that connects them. The primary goals are to stimulate discussion around Botto's generated fragments, encourage the artistic and creative expression of the DAO, promote the use of the new favorites feature on botto.com, and allow DAO members to participate in a curation competition.

Rationale

To understand the background of this proposal, it's important to note that Botto generates various art fragments over time. However, these fragments often lack context or interpretation. This proposal seeks to address this by organizing a curation competition. The motives behind this proposal include generating more discussion around Botto's creations, showcasing the creative side of the DAO, and incentivizing the use of the new favorites feature on Botto.com while also incentivizing voting and curation withing the first 48 hours of the weekly rounds.

Proposal Specification

Once per week create a dedicated "Jokerace" page to govern a curation competition at the beginning of each weekly round.
DAO members will curate their selection of 5 Botto fragments, providing a title and a one-paragraph editorial for each. (Open for the first 48 hour of the weekly round)
- Participants will use the favorite feature on botto.com to curate their selections.
- DAO members submit their curated selections on the Jokerace page.
DAO members will vote on their favorite curation on the Jokerace page. (Open for 48 hours after submission period ends)
Winners will be rewarded once at the end of the competition.

Budget

The budget for this competition is 6,000 in $BOTTO tokens per curation competition

Prize distribution:
1st place - 3,000
2nd place - 1,500
3rd place - 750
4th place - 525
5th place - 525

Criteria of Success

The success of this proposal can be determined by the following criteria:

Receiving 25 or more submissions for the curation competition
More activity and conversation around Botto’s fragments
More users voting within the first 48 hours of a new round

Disadvantages

One drawback of this proposal is the necessity for DAO members to use two different platforms (botto.com and Jokerace) for participation. This could lead to frustrations and a learning curve, as Jokerace may not be familiar to most DAO members.

Another is that in order to keep cost low for the contest runner and the participants, they will have to use a Layer2 network as Jokerace is an onchain governance tool. Most are unfamiliar with how they operate and how to transfer funds and this might create a barrier of entry for some

Really happy to see this. Think this is a great step towards incentivizing and encouraging the critical curation in the first 48 hours.

Running the test will be good to see how the different parameters work.

Some alternatives I'm interested in as we test this out:

Lightening the editorial: One paragraph each for 5 is a significant lift, maybe just writing something about the overall selection. Or not require editorial at all?
Judge(s): having subjective judging by selected individuals rather than voted on by DAO can protect against gaming it
Adding another competition for interpretations of the weekly mint
Gating participation based on proof of participation in Botto to filter out low-quality submissions. Can easily gate just on holding $BOTTO.

Really like the initiative. I'm not a fan of token-gated voting outside of Botto itself and governance.

We'd benefit from more discussion in Discord #curation so I'd like to see something like this happen there.

I think there's a lot of good design considerations that make this strong fit for jokerace.

I agree with the need to stimulate discussion in Discord. But then there’s a question of running a credible vote there, and I think we can still influence discord discussion via cross sharing and eventually a bot that auto posts submissions made.

What exactly is the problem we’re trying to solve with this proposal? Are we not satisfied with participation in general? Is the problem only the first 24h? The use of the favorite feature?

Carbono this in part aims to supplement what we lost from removing retroactive rewards, which was rewarding different kinds of voting behavior that is believed to be beneficial to Botto but creates a sybil vulnerability if we reward it automatically with proportional share of revenue. There is still general incentive alignment to provide different kinds of voting input as it helps Botto, but it is not as direct through active rewards only.

The 2nd most popular retroactive reward was voting in the first 2 days of the round. I presume that is because people generally agreed that the influence those first 48 hrs had in determining what most people saw (and therefore voted on) later in the round, was significant and valuable.

This is an experiment with other ways of rewarding valuable behavior of smaller holders that is less vulnerable to sybil. My comment above also suggests some ways it can be strengthened, such as with judges.
